The first generation Ford Fiesta (Mk1), launched in 1976, was a landmark vehicle, being Ford Europe’s first multi-national front-wheel drive car. It went on sale in the UK in early 1977, the basic 950cc version selling from £1,856.

When the first Fiesta took to the stage it was something of a novelty – just the second mini hatchback to have been built in the UK. Drivers snapped up the feisty Fiesta – a million were produced from the launch up to 1979.

By 1983 Ford had decided that with a rush of other similar sized vehicles being launched the Fiesta had best be updated to keep it competitive. So along came the Ford Fiesta Mk2 with a revised front end and interior, and wrap-around headlights. More changes followed as the 80s progressed with some new versions being introduced, like the XR2 and a diesel engine version. In 1987, its best year for sales in the UK, the Fiesta went automatic.

Ford Fiesta Mk3 launched with a new shape, ABS brakes and other improvements in 1989.
